On September 12, the “2025 Taichung Sustainable City Forum:Toward Net-Zero and Climate Adaptation,” co-hosted by the Taichung City Government and the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan ( ECCT ), was successfully held. Dr. Jules Chuang, Director of Mt.Stonegate, served as panel moderator, facilitating a dynamic dialogue between government and business leaders.
Taichung’s Net-Zero Roadmap and Global Recognition
The forum highlighted concrete themes including waste reduction, recycled materials, circular economy, and renewable energy promotion. Mayor Lu announced Taichung’s ambitious goals: a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. She emphasized that with solar, small hydro , and offshore wind development, the city’s renewable energy capacity has reached 2,161 MW—ranking 4th nationwide and 2nd among Taiwan’s six major cities. Taichung has also been internationally recognized with an “A List” rating from the CDP, alongside Paris and London, as well as multiple Asia-Pacific sustainability awards.

Corporate Leaders Share Best Practices
During the corporate session, representatives from wpd Taiwan Energy, Apollotech information, and ABB Taiwan shared practical experiences in renewable energy development, resource recycling, and energy efficiency, offering insights that enhance corporate sustainability and competitiveness.
wpd Taiwan Energy discussed the opportunities and challenges of onshore wind and solar in Taichung, stressing the importance of effective land use and streamlined administrative processes. In response, the Economic Development Bureau presented support measures including facility expansion and talent cultivation.
Apollotech Information highlighted that “waste is a resource misplaced,” showcasing advanced recycling practices in the electronics sector and demonstrating the potential of circular business models.
ABB Taiwan emphasized that motors account for 45% of global electricity use. By introducing high-efficiency designs and circular products, such as motors made with 100% recycled aluminum, ABB has reduced CO₂ emissions in manufacturing by 20%, proving that energy efficiency and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Through this forum, Taichung reaffirmed its role as a leader in international climate action and underscored the importance of public-private collaboration in achieving sustainability.
