In order to limit global warming to 1.5°C, corporations have set ambitious decarbonization targets, such as committing to net-zero operations or achieving climate neutrality. These objectives have driven them to integrate emission reduction strategies into their business models, encompassing reductions across the Greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3). Consequently, the application of carbon credits, also known as carbon offsets or Verified Emissions Reductions (VER), has gained significance, as unavoidable emissions remain inevitable to encourage emission reduction efforts.
By creating a market for carbon credits, emissions can be effectively offset by investing in projects like renewable energy, forest conversation, and other decarbonization initiatives. One carbon credit is issued for each ton of carbon dioxide equivalent sequestered or averted from these projects.
